Every year, tens of thousands of Cameroonian students sit competitive entrance examinations known as concours. The stakes are high: a place at the Faculty of Medicine, at NAHPI Bamenda, at ENS Yaoundé, or at ENAM can define a career for decades. Yet most candidates prepare without a clear map of what each concours tests, who qualifies, or how the exams differ from one institution to the next.
This guide is that map. Whether you are in Upper Sixth weighing your options, a university student targeting medical school, or a repeat candidate trying a different institution, you will find a structured overview of Cameroon’s major concours, how they compare, and where to find the past papers and preparation tools you need.
What This Guide Covers
- The main categories of concours in Cameroon and what career each one leads to
- Entry requirements and typical exam structures for medical, engineering, teacher training, and administrative concours
- How competitive each major examination is and what preparation timeline is realistic
- Where to download free past questions for every major institution
- How to use past papers and app-based practice to move up the merit list
What Is a Concours in Cameroon?
A concours is a competitive entrance examination administered by a public university, professional school, or ministry. Unlike GCE, which certifies that you completed secondary education, a concours selects a limited number of candidates for admission into a specific programme. Places are awarded purely on merit: your rank on the published merit list determines whether you get in.
Cameroon runs concours in both English and French, and Anglophone and Francophone students often compete for the same seats. Some examinations are national (medical concours), others are institution-specific (FET Buea, NAHPI Bamenda). Understanding which concours matches your qualifications and career goal is the first step toward effective preparation.
Medical and Biomedical Sciences Concours
The medical concours is the most competitive entrance exam in Cameroon. Candidates sit papers in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, often with additional components testing reasoning and general science knowledge. Admission leads to medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and related biomedical programmes at faculties such as FMSB at the University of Yaoundé I and other state medical faculties.
Typical candidates hold GCE A Level passes in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, or are enrolled in first-year science programmes at university. Competition is extreme: over 10,000 candidates may sit for fewer than 400 places at the main institutions. Preparation requires six months of focused work minimum, with daily timed past paper practice in all three sciences.

Engineering and Polytechnic Concours
Engineering concours select candidates for national polytechnic schools and faculty-level engineering programmes. Major institutions include:
- ENSP Yaoundé (Polytechnique Yaoundé): flagship national engineering school; highly competitive; strong emphasis on Mathematics and Physics
- NAHPI Bamenda: National Higher Polytechnic Institute; major option for North West candidates; departments cover civil, electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering
- FET Buea: Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Buea; strong regional demand; papers test Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
- ENSTP Yaoundé: specialises in public works and civil engineering careers
- ENSPD Douala: polytechnic training in the Littoral region
Engineering concours papers typically test advanced Mathematics, Physics, and sometimes Chemistry or technical drawing. Candidates who score well in GCE A Level Pure Mathematics and Physics have a structural advantage, but concours-level questions go deeper and faster than typical A Level papers. A preparation plan of four to six months with weekly full timed simulations is standard for competitive engineering schools.

Teacher Training: ENS Concours
The Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) trains secondary school teachers through scholarship-funded programmes at campuses in Yaoundé, Bambili, and Maroua. The DIPES II concours targets GCE A Level holders and is open across science, humanities, and language disciplines.
The ENS examination typically includes five written papers: main subject, second subject, general culture, language (French or English), and an oral for shortlisted candidates. Science candidates often underestimate the general culture and language papers, which can cost several merit-list positions. A balanced six-month plan that allocates time to every paper, not just the main discipline, separates admitted candidates from those who studied hard in one subject only.
Administrative and Professional Concours
ENAM (Ecole Nationale d’Administration et de Magistrature) selects candidates for careers in public administration and the judiciary. Papers test law, general knowledge, French language proficiency, and analytical writing. It is among the most intellectually demanding concours and attracts university graduates as well as strong Upper Sixth candidates.
IRIC (Institut des Relations Internationales du Cameroun) trains diplomats and international relations professionals. Preparation combines current affairs, history, languages, and structured essay writing.
ESSEC Douala and similar business schools run concours for management and commerce programmes. Papers often combine quantitative reasoning, economics, and language.
Health Sciences Beyond Medicine
Nursing, midwifery, and paramedical concours operate at regional and national levels. These examinations are less crowded than medical concours but still require solid science foundations and familiarity with past paper formats. Candidates preparing for medical concours sometimes use nursing concours as a parallel target; the Biology and Chemistry overlap is significant.
How Cameroon Concours Compare to GCE
GCE certifies completion of a level of secondary education. Concours select candidates for specific programmes. You can hold strong GCE grades and still fail a concours if you have not practised concours-style questions under timed conditions. Conversely, concours success does not replace GCE: most competitive concours require A Level passes or equivalent as a minimum entry condition.
Upper Sixth students often ask whether to prioritise GCE A Level or concours preparation. The answer depends on timing: if your target concours sits before or shortly after A Level results, you must run both in parallel with a weekly schedule that protects A Level subjects while building concours past paper stamina. See our dedicated guide on studying for GCE and concours at the same time for a week-by-week framework.
Realistic Preparation Timelines by Concours Type
| Concours type | Minimum prep time | Ideal prep time | Past papers per week (peak phase) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medical | 4 months | 6 to 8 months | 3 to 4 full timed papers |
| Engineering (ENSP, NAHPI, FET) | 3 months | 5 to 6 months | 2 to 3 full timed papers |
| ENS (teacher training) | 3 months | 5 to 6 months | 2 papers plus daily culture reading |
| ENAM / IRIC | 4 months | 6 months | Essay practice plus past papers |
How to Use Past Papers for Any Concours
Past papers are not for reading. They are for simulation. Follow this method for any institution:
- Download papers for the last five years from eStudy Universe
- Sit Paper 1 under strict exam timing with no notes
- Mark using worked solutions; record every lost mark by topic in a weakness log
- Spend two study sessions fixing the top three weak topics before attempting the next paper
- Repeat until your timed scores stabilise within five marks of your target merit-list rank
The eStudy Universe Practice Center lets you drill topic-specific questions when your weakness log shows a recurring gap, for example organic Chemistry mechanisms for medical concours or integration techniques for engineering papers. Performance Analytics in the app tracks scores across subjects over 7, 30, and 90 days so you know where to focus next instead of guessing.
Quick Summary
- Each concours has different entry rules, paper structure, and career outcomes: research your target institution before you register.
- Medical and top engineering concours require at least four to six months of daily preparation with timed past papers.
- GCE success alone does not guarantee concours admission: concours questions are faster, deeper, and marked on a merit list.
- Free past questions for major institutions are on eStudy Universe, including medical, FET, NAHPI, ENS, and ENAM papers.
- Use the eStudy Universe app for offline past papers, worked solutions, AI Tutor support, and Performance Analytics to track weak areas.
