Managing Expectations While Waiting
Remark outcomes may arrive after resit registration closes. If you cannot afford to wait, register for resit while the remark processes. Some candidates succeed on remark and withdraw resit fees per official rules — verify with your centre.
When Remarks Are a Bad Idea
Large gaps across multiple papers, absent examination attendance issues, or known weak preparation rarely reverse on remark. Invest revision hours in the next sitting instead.

Running a Remark and a Resit in Parallel
The timing problem nobody warns candidates about is that a remark outcome can arrive after the resit registration window has closed. Waiting for the remark before deciding anything is the single most expensive mistake in this process, because a disappointing outcome then leaves you with no session to sit and a full year lost.
Treat them as independent tracks. Submit the remark application through the official channel, and then plan and register for the resit as though the remark will not succeed. If the remark comes back in your favour, you withdraw from or simply do not sit that paper, and you have lost only the registration fee. If it does not, you are already prepared and entered.
Do not pause revision while you wait. The weeks between application and outcome are the most useful revision weeks you have, and they are also the ones candidates most often waste refreshing for news. Revise the disputed subject exactly as if the resit is certain. Nothing about that work is wasted under either outcome.
Keep the paperwork for both. Remark receipts, resit registration confirmation, and your original slip should be kept together. If a university or concours file is being assembled during this period, submit it with the current grades and a note that a remark is pending, rather than delaying the whole application.
Set your own deadline. Decide in advance the date by which, with no outcome, you proceed as if the grade stands. Written down in advance, that date prevents the drift that turns one disputed grade into a lost year. The resit registration guide covers the entry process itself.
Why 2026 Produced More Remark Requests Than Usual
The 2026 results, released on 21 August 2026, recorded an Advanced Level pass rate of 61.78 percent against 79.39 percent in 2025. A fall of that size in one session produces a predictable response: a large number of candidates whose grades came in well below their mocks, and a corresponding surge in remark and recheck applications.
Before you join that queue, it is worth being honest about what a national drop of seventeen points implies. When a pass rate falls that far across nearly seventy thousand candidates, the most likely explanation for an individual result below expectation is that the session itself was harder, not that a script was mismarked. Widespread underperformance relative to mocks is evidence about the papers, not evidence about your marking.
That does not mean no remark is justified in 2026. It means the case for one has to rest on something specific to your script rather than on general disappointment.
Building a Case That Is Worth the Fee
A remark application is stronger when you can point to a concrete inconsistency rather than a feeling.
A grade that contradicts your own pattern in that subject. If you scored consistently at B across school assessments, mocks, and continuous evaluation in one subject, and the certificate returns a U in that subject alone while your other grades match expectation, that single outlier is the pattern worth querying.
A paper you can reconstruct. If you remember the questions you answered and can show your working produced correct answers, that is a specific claim. If you cannot recall the paper at all, you have nothing to place against the mark.
An administrative irregularity. A missing subject, an absence recorded for a paper you sat, or a script that ran out of answer booklets is a different category of problem and should be raised as such immediately.
Where none of these apply and the grade is simply lower than you hoped across several subjects, the resit route is usually the better use of the same money and the same months.
Decide Within the First Week
Remark applications carry deadlines, and those deadlines fall while you are still absorbing the result. Give yourself the first few days to be disappointed, then make the decision deliberately: apply for the remark, register for the resit, or accept the grade and move to the next stage.
Any of the three is a reasonable answer. Making none of them, and finding in October that both windows have closed, is the outcome to avoid, and it is by far the most common one.
