Why re-reading fails
Re-reading produces fluency — the material looks familiar, so your brain reports that you know it. Familiarity and recall are different things, and only one of them is tested in an examination hall.
This is the single most costly misjudgement in student work. It explains the experience of revising a topic for hours, feeling confident, and then going blank on the paper. Nothing went wrong on the day; the confidence was measuring the wrong thing all along.
Highlighting has the same problem, with an added cost: it converts an active decision into a passive one. You mark the sentence instead of processing it.
Retrieval practice: the core technique
Retrieval practice means producing the answer from memory before looking. Every act of successful retrieval strengthens the memory more than another exposure does.
How to run it:
- Read a section once, properly.
- Close it. Write down everything you can remember — messily, in your own words.
- Open it and mark what you missed. The gaps are the entire point; that is your revision list.
- Repeat only the gaps, not the whole section.
It feels worse than re-reading. That is expected and is not a sign it is failing — the difficulty is what produces the learning. Researchers call this a desirable difficulty, and the discomfort is the mechanism.
Past papers are retrieval practice in its highest-value form, because they retrieve exactly the material in exactly the format the examiner will use. Working through past GCE questions under timed conditions does more in an hour than three hours of re-reading notes.
Spaced repetition: when to revisit
Memory decays predictably, and reviewing just as it starts to fade produces the strongest gain. Cramming everything into one session is the least efficient possible arrangement of the same hours.

Five short sessions across a month beat one long session, using less total time. The catch is that it requires deciding what to study a month in advance, which is why spacing fails for most students — not because it is hard, but because it needs a plan.
Interleaving: mix the problems up
Doing twenty questions of the same type in a row teaches you to apply one method twenty times. It does not teach you to choose the method — and choosing is most of what an exam tests.
Interleaving means mixing question types within a session: three differentiation problems, two integration, two from mechanics, back to differentiation. Performance during the session drops noticeably. Performance in the exam rises. Blocked practice feels better and works worse, which is the same trap as re-reading in a different costume.
Elaboration: ask why, not what
After learning something, ask why is this true and how does it connect to what I already know. Explaining a concept aloud, as if to someone who does not know it, exposes gaps immediately — the point at which your explanation becomes vague is precisely the point you do not understand.
This is why teaching a topic to a study partner is among the most efficient uses of an hour, provided you actually explain rather than read aloud.
A session structure that works
Sixty to ninety minutes, then a real break. Within a session:
- First 10 minutes — recall the previous session from memory. No notes.
- Next 40 minutes — new material, in short blocks, each closed with a blank-page recall.
- Final 10 minutes — write three questions the examiner could ask about what you just covered. Answer them next session.

Studying without reliable internet or power

Separate the work that needs a connection from the work that does not. Downloading papers, notes and marking schemes needs bandwidth; working through them does not.
