Most revision timetables fail in the first week, and they fail for the same reason: they are built as a wish rather than as a budget. A timetable that allocates more hours than you have is not a plan, and abandoning it feels like a personal failure rather than what it is — an arithmetic error.
Step 1: count the hours before allocating any
Write down a normal week and subtract everything that is not negotiable: school or lectures, travel, meals, sleep, chores, religious commitments, family obligations, work if you work. What remains is your real budget.
Most students find between 12 and 20 usable hours a week, and are shocked, because the timetable they were about to build assumed 35. Discovering this on paper in week one is far better than discovering it by failing to keep up in week three.
Then cut that figure by 20 percent. That margin is not laziness — it is what absorbs the illness, the funeral, the power cut and the week your timetable is simply wrong.
Step 2: allocate by weakness and weight, not evenly
An even split feels fair and is close to the worst possible allocation. Two factors should drive it:
- Exam weight. A subject carrying two papers deserves more time than one carrying a single paper.
- Your current position. Moving a weak subject from a D to a C usually costs less time than moving a strong subject from a B to an A, and is worth more overall.
Grade each subject honestly on a scale of one to five for how confident you are, then invert it to get a weighting. The subject you enjoy least usually needs the most time, which is exactly why timetables built on preference fail.
Step 3: schedule topics, never subjects
This is the single change that makes the difference between a timetable that is followed and one that is not.
“Saturday 9-11: Chemistry” is not a task. You will sit down, wonder where to start, re-read a chapter, and finish knowing nothing new. “Saturday 9-11: Organic mechanisms — blank-page recall, then 2010-2014 past-paper questions on the topic” is a task. It has a start, a method and an end.
Building this list requires the syllabus. Break each subject into its actual topics, mark each one as secure, shaky or untouched, and schedule from the shaky and untouched lists first. Step 4: put review on the calendar
Almost every homemade timetable covers each topic exactly once and then never returns to it. That guarantees you will have forgotten September’s work by May.
Reserve roughly a third of every week for revisiting older material. A workable pattern:

Timed practice is the slot students cut first and should cut last. Knowing a topic and being able to produce it in 40 minutes under pressure are different skills, and only one of them is examined.
Step 5: choose a block length you can hold
Ninety minutes with a ten-minute break suits most people for problem subjects. Sixty minutes suits reading-heavy ones. Three-hour blocks look impressive on paper and decay into forty minutes of work and two hours of presence.
Two rules make blocks survive: the phone leaves the room, and each block ends with three questions written down for the next session on that topic. Ending with questions rather than with exhaustion makes the next session start instantly instead of costing fifteen minutes of re-orientation.
A worked example
A candidate with 15 usable hours a week, three subjects, weakest in Mathematics:
- Mathematics — 6 hours: two new-topic blocks, one review block, one timed past paper.
- Physics — 5 hours: one new-topic block, one review, one timed section.
- Chemistry (strongest) — 3 hours: one new-topic block, one review.
- Slack — 1 hour, unassigned.
Note that the strongest subject still gets time. Dropping a strong subject entirely is how students arrive at the exam having quietly lost a grade in the thing they were counting on.
When the timetable breaks
It will. The failure mode that matters is not missing a session — it is abandoning the whole plan because you missed one.
Decide the recovery rule in advance: a missed session is skipped, not rescheduled. Move on to the next slot as written. Rolling missed work forward creates a debt that grows until the timetable becomes a record of failure and gets thrown away.
Review the plan once a week, for ten minutes. Which topics moved from shaky to secure? Which subject is falling behind? Adjust next week’s allocation. A timetable written once in September and never revised is describing a student who no longer exists.
Planning without reliable power or internet
Keep the timetable on paper, on a wall. It survives a flat battery and it is visible to you and to whoever else is in the house, which helps more than it sounds.
Separate the tasks that need a connection from those that do not, and batch the connected ones. Downloading past papers and marking schemes needs bandwidth once; working through them needs none. Build a local library in one deliberate session and schedule offline work around it.
