Undergraduate vs Postgraduate: What Actually Changes

Undergraduate and postgraduate are not just two rungs on a ladder. They are different kinds of study with different purposes, different funding and, most importantly, a different relationship to being told what to do.

What each level covers

Level Qualification Duration Entered from
Undergraduate Bachelor’s / Licence 3-4 years Secondary school
Postgraduate taught PGCert, PGDip, Master’s 4 months – 2 years A bachelor’s degree
Postgraduate research MPhil, PhD / Doctorat 3-6 years A master’s, usually

Under the LMD system used in Cameroon the same three tiers appear as Licence, Master, Doctorat — which is precisely why LMD was adopted: the structure lines up with the European one, so a transcript travels.

The real difference: who decides what you study

Length and difficulty are the obvious differences and the least important ones.

An undergraduate degree is largely prescribed. Someone else has decided the modules, the reading and the assessment. Success comes from covering the specified ground well.

Postgraduate study is largely self-directed. You are given a question, or you find one, and the work is yours to structure. A supervisor advises rather than instructs. Students who were excellent undergraduates sometimes struggle here, not because the material is harder but because nobody is telling them what to do next — and that is a skill, not a personality trait.

Doctoral study takes this further still. The requirement is an original contribution: something not previously known. That is a categorical shift, not an incremental one.

Do you need a master’s before a doctorate?

It depends entirely on the system, and getting this wrong wastes years.

  • United States — many PhD programmes admit directly from a bachelor’s degree and award a master’s along the way. A separate master’s is often unnecessary.
  • United Kingdom — a master’s is usually expected, though strong candidates are sometimes admitted directly.
  • Europe and LMD countries including Cameroon — the master’s is normally required. Under LMD, the M2 with a completed memoire is the standard route into the Doctorat.

Funding works in opposite directions

This surprises almost everyone, and it changes how you should plan.

Undergraduate study is mostly something you pay for. Full undergraduate scholarships for international students exist but are rare.

Doctoral study is frequently something you are paid for. Funded PhD positions commonly cover fees and provide a stipend, particularly in the sciences, because a doctoral researcher is producing work for the institution.

Taught master’s degrees sit between the two — usually self-funded, sometimes scholarship-supported. The practical consequence for a Cameroonian student is a route that is often overlooked: complete the Licence locally at manageable cost, then apply for funded postgraduate study abroad, where the money actually is. That is the path most funded African postgraduates took, and it is more reliable than chasing scarce undergraduate awards.

What changes in the assessment

  • Fewer, larger pieces of work. A master’s module may be assessed by a single 4,000-word essay rather than by coursework and an examination.
  • A dissertation or memoire is standard at master’s level, and it is the component that most often determines whether the degree finishes on time.
  • Reading is set as a floor, not a ceiling. An undergraduate reading list is what you must cover; a postgraduate one is where you start.
  • Higher pass marks. Many postgraduate programmes set the pass at 50 percent where the undergraduate pass was 40.

When postgraduate study is worth it

The honest answer is: when a specific door requires it. Good reasons include a regulated profession that mandates it, an academic or research career, a genuine specialisation you cannot get at undergraduate level, or a documented salary and role step in your field.

Weaker reasons include uncertainty about what to do next, or the belief that another qualification will substitute for experience. In many fields two years of work outperforms a second degree, and a master’s taken to postpone a decision usually postpones it at considerable cost.

If you are still choosing an undergraduate route, the decision that matters most is upstream of all this: whether you enter an open faculty or sit a concours for a grande ecole. The UY1 and UY2 registration guide sets out that distinction, which shapes which postgraduate routes are open to you three years later.

Frequently asked questions

What does postgraduate mean?

Any study undertaken after a first degree — postgraduate certificates and diplomas, master’s degrees and doctorates.

Is a master’s the same as postgraduate?

A master’s is one kind of postgraduate qualification. Postgraduate is the broader category.

Can I go straight from a bachelor’s to a PhD?

In the United States frequently; in Britain sometimes; in Europe and under LMD rarely without a master’s.

Is postgraduate study harder?

Different rather than simply harder. The material is deeper, but the real change is that the direction is yours to set.

What is postgraduate called in Cameroon?

Master and Doctorat under the LMD system, following the Licence.
