IELTS, TOEFL, TCF or DELF: Which Language Test Do You Need?

Almost every application to study abroad requires proof of language ability, and choosing the wrong test wastes both a fee and several weeks. The tests are not interchangeable, and the right one is decided by your destination, not by which looks easiest.

The speaking format is the difference that matters most in practice. IELTS puts you opposite a person, which suits candidates who converse well and unsettles those who freeze under direct attention. TOEFL and PTE have you speak to a microphone in a room of other people doing the same, which suits the opposite temperament. Choose on that, not on the score scale.

The French tests, and a distinction that matters

The francophone tests split into two categories that are frequently confused.

  • TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) — a proficiency test producing a level result, valid for a limited period. Required for many university applications and for Campus France procedures.
  • TEF (Test d’Évaluation de Français) — similar in role, widely used for Canadian immigration and some academic purposes.
  • DELF and DALF — diplomas, not tests. You sit one level (A1 through C2), and if you pass, it is yours permanently. It never expires.

That last point is the practical one. A DELF B2 obtained at eighteen is still valid at thirty; a TCF result is not. If you have time and expect to need proof of French repeatedly over the years, the diploma route is better value even though it takes longer.

For Cameroonian candidates there is an obvious efficiency here: anglophone students who studied GCE French seriously often sit closer to B2 than they assume, and francophone students applying to English-medium programmes are frequently a short course away from the band they need. Sit a practice test before assuming you need months of preparation.

What score do you actually need?

Requirements are set by the institution and the programme, not by the test. Broad reference points for university entry:

Level of study IELTS TOEFL iBT CEFR
Foundation / pathway 4.5-5.5 42-60 B1-B2
Undergraduate 6.0-6.5 72-90 B2
Postgraduate 6.5-7.0 90-100 B2-C1
Law, medicine, journalism 7.0-7.5 100-110 C1

Watch for the minimum per component. A programme asking for 6.5 overall commonly also requires no band below 6.0, and candidates fail on a single weak section while clearing the overall figure. Check the sub-scores before you plan your preparation, because it changes which skill you should work on.

Preparing efficiently

These are tests of technique as much as of language, and the technique is learnable in weeks.

Sit a full timed practice test first. Not to score well — to find out which component is weakest. Most candidates guess wrong about this, and guessing wrong means preparing the wrong skill for a month.

Then work almost entirely on the weakest component. Because the minimum-per-band rule usually binds, moving your worst section from 5.5 to 6.5 is worth far more than moving your best from 7.5 to 8.0.

Learn the format cold. Knowing exactly how many parts the speaking test has, how long each takes, and what the examiner is scoring removes the single largest source of avoidable loss.

Writing is where most candidates underperform. It is marked on task fulfilment, coherence, vocabulary range and grammatical accuracy — in that order. Answering the actual question asked, with a clear structure, beats decorative vocabulary that drifts off task.

Booking: the mistakes that cost a cycle

  • Booking too late. Test centres in Cameroon have limited dates and fill up. Results then take one to two weeks, and universities need them before their own deadline. Work backwards from the application deadline and add a month.
  • Not leaving room to retake. If the score matters, book early enough that a second attempt is possible.
  • Taking the wrong version. IELTS Academic, not General Training, for university study. This error is common and unrecoverable.
  • Assuming acceptance. Not every university accepts every test. Confirm on the institution’s own admissions page.
  • Forgetting the identity document. The passport used at booking must be the one you bring, and the details must match exactly.

When you might not need a test at all

Some institutions waive the language requirement where your previous education was conducted in the language. This is genuinely relevant to Cameroonian applicants: a candidate whose entire secondary and undergraduate education was in English, evidenced by a GCE Board certificate and a university transcript, may qualify for a waiver.

It is never automatic. Ask the admissions office directly, in writing, before paying for a test — and keep the reply. A waiver granted verbally and forgotten at visa stage is worse than no waiver at all, because the visa authority may still require the test even when the university does not.

Frequently asked questions

Which is easier, IELTS or TOEFL?

Neither is objectively easier. IELTS suits people who speak better face to face; TOEFL suits people comfortable working entirely on a computer.

How long is a result valid?

Two years for IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and TCF. DELF and DALF are diplomas and do not expire.

Can I retake just one section?

Some IELTS centres offer a single-component retake. Availability varies, so confirm locally before relying on it.

Do I need a language test if I studied in English?

Sometimes not — many institutions grant a waiver on evidence. Confirm in writing, and check whether the visa authority also accepts it.

How long should I prepare?

Four to eight weeks of focused work on the weakest component is typical for someone already near the required level.
