A bachelor’s degree is counted in credits, not in years, and the two only line up if you carry a full load every semester. Understanding the arithmetic is what lets you see, in your second year, whether you are actually on course to graduate on time.
How the 120 credits divide
| Component | Typical credits | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| General education | 30-45 | Writing, mathematics, a science, social science, humanities |
| Major | 36-60 | The subject the degree is named after |
| Minor or concentration | 15-21 | Optional second field |
| Free electives | 15-30 | Your choice |
Engineering, architecture and some professional degrees run higher — commonly 128 to 140 credits — because accreditation bodies specify content the standard 120 cannot hold. That is why an engineering degree is often five years rather than four.
The 12-versus-15 trap
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the credit system, and it costs students a year without their noticing until late.
Twelve credits is usually the minimum to count as full-time — for enrolment status, for accommodation, sometimes for a visa. But 120 divided by 12 is ten semesters, not eight.
| Credits per semester | Semesters to 120 | Elapsed |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | 8 | 4 years |
| 14 | 9 (rounded) | 4.5 years |
| 12 | 10 | 5 years |
| 15 + one summer course a year | — | about 3.5 years |
A student can therefore be officially full-time for four straight years and finish 24 credits short. Check your total against 120 at the end of every year, not at the end.
What one credit hour represents
A measure of time, not of difficulty. The standard definition is one hour of class per week across a fifteen-week semester, plus roughly two hours of independent work for each contact hour.
So a three-credit course is designed around about nine hours a week of your time, and a fifteen-credit semester is designed as a forty-five hour working week. Students who plan around the timetable are planning around a third of the work.
Reading this from Cameroon
Under the LMD system a Licence is 180 credits over six semesters — 60 credits an academic year, 30 a semester. That is the same unit used across the European Higher Education Area, which is precisely why LMD was adopted: it makes a Cameroonian transcript legible abroad.
Two practical points follow.
A Licence and an American bachelor’s are both first degrees but are not credit-for-credit equal. 180 LMD credits over three years is not 120 US semester credits over four. The rough working conversion is 2 ECTS to 1 US semester credit, which puts 180 LMD credits near 90 US credits — short of 120. In practice a receiving institution decides, and many admit Licence holders to postgraduate study directly. Do not do this arithmetic yourself on an application; the credential evaluator does it.
HND and BTS holders are frequently admitted into the final year of a Licence rather than starting again. Ask the receiving faculty how many credits are granted, in writing, before enrolling — the credit transfer guide explains why the course outline matters as much as the transcript.
Finishing faster, and the honest limits
Genuine ways to shorten it: summer sessions, which are the most reliable; transfer credit from an accredited institution, where an articulation agreement exists; examination credit where your system offers it; and choosing a degree with fewer required credits from the outset.
What does not work is overloading. Twenty-one credits in a semester is theoretically possible at some institutions and reliably produces worse grades, and a repeated course costs more time than the one it saved.
And check prerequisite chains before dropping anything. Falling three credits behind does not cost three credits — it can cost a year, because the course you skipped is the gate to a course offered only in one semester.
Frequently asked questions
How many credits is a bachelor’s degree?
120 semester credit hours, or 180 quarter credits. Under LMD, a Licence is 180 credits over three years.
How many credits per semester should I take?
Fifteen to finish in four years. Twelve keeps you full-time but adds a year.
Is an engineering degree more credits?
Usually — commonly 128 to 140, because accreditation specifies content that will not fit in 120.
Do transferred credits count towards the 120?
Yes, where accepted. The grades often do not transfer, so your GPA restarts.
How do I know if I am on track?
Divide your total credits earned by 30. That is roughly how many years of the degree you have completed, regardless of how long you have been enrolled.
