A semester is the block of teaching that a university year is divided into. Almost every question about how long a degree takes eventually comes back to it: how many semesters you sit, how many weeks each one runs, and how many credits you can carry in one. This guide answers all three, for the American, British, European and Cameroonian systems.
How long is one semester?
A semester runs 15 to 16 weeks of instruction, followed by a final examination period of about one week. Counting orientation and the exam window, most institutions describe a semester as roughly 16 to 18 weeks door to door — a little under four months.
The word itself is a clue. Semester comes from the Latin semestris, meaning six months, because the two teaching blocks plus their breaks divide the calendar year in half. The teaching itself is shorter than six months; the half-year is the container, not the contact time.
How many semesters are in a year?
Two. The academic year is built from a first semester and a second semester:
- First semester — begins in September or October, runs to December or January.
- Second semester — begins in January or February, runs to May or June.
Many universities also offer an optional summer session of six to twelve weeks. It is not a third semester in the degree structure: it exists so students can retake a failed course, lighten a heavy year, or graduate early. Counting it, some students complete three teaching blocks in one calendar year while still being enrolled in a two-semester programme.
Semesters, quarters and trimesters compared
Not every university divides the year the same way, and the differences matter if you are transferring credits between systems.
| System | Terms per year | Length of each | Typical course load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester | 2 (+ optional summer) | 15-16 teaching weeks | 5 courses / 15 credit hours |
| Quarter | 3 (+ optional summer) | 10-11 teaching weeks | 3-4 courses / 12 quarter credits |
| Trimester | 3 | 12-13 teaching weeks | 3-4 courses |
| Term (UK style) | 3 | 8-12 teaching weeks | Assessed by module, not term |
The quarter system moves faster and covers less ground per course, so students take more courses over a degree. The conversion used almost universally is 1 semester credit = 1.5 quarter credits. A 120-semester-credit bachelor’s degree is 180 quarter credits — the same degree, counted in smaller units.
How many weeks of actual teaching?
Fifteen weeks of teaching does not mean fifteen weeks of every class. What you should count is contact hours. A course worth three credit hours typically meets for three hours a week across the semester, which is roughly 45 contact hours in total.
The American credit-hour definition assumes a further two hours of independent work for every contact hour. So a three-credit course is designed around about nine hours a week of your time, and a standard 15-credit semester is designed as a 45-hour week. Students who treat the timetable as the workload are the ones who are surprised in week ten.
The Cameroonian academic year
Cameroonian universities run the LMD system — Licence, Master, Doctorat — adopted across francophone Africa to align with the European structure. Under LMD the year is two semesters, and progression is measured in credits rather than in years passed.
- Licence — 6 semesters, 180 credits, normally 3 years.
- Master — 4 semesters, 120 credits, normally 2 years.
- Doctorat — 3 years or more, research-based.
One academic year is 60 credits, so a full-time semester is 30 credits. That number is the same one used across the European Higher Education Area, which is precisely why LMD was adopted: it makes a Cameroonian transcript legible to a French, Belgian or Canadian admissions office.
In practice the Cameroonian calendar shifts more than the published dates suggest, and the grandes ecoles that recruit by concours often run their own rhythm. Plan around the semester structure, but confirm dates with the faculty rather than with a WhatsApp group.
Britain, Europe and the credit you actually carry
British universities usually teach in three terms but assess in two semesters, and they count in credits where a full undergraduate year is 120 UK credits. A standard module is 15 or 20 credits.
Across the European Higher Education Area the unit is ECTS. One academic year is 60 ECTS, and one ECTS credit represents 25 to 30 hours of total student workload including private study. The conversions that matter when you are comparing offers:
| One full-time academic year | Equals |
|---|---|
| United States | 30 semester credit hours |
| Europe / LMD (incl. Cameroon) | 60 ECTS or LMD credits |
| United Kingdom | 120 UK credits |
| Quarter-system US universities | 45 quarter credits |
The rough working rule when converting a Cameroonian or European transcript to an American one is 2 ECTS to 1 US semester credit. Treat it as an estimate: the receiving institution decides, and it will look at course content, not only at the number.
Why the length of a semester matters to your plan
Three practical consequences follow from the fifteen-week shape, and students who understand them early do noticeably better.
The middle is where courses are lost. Weeks six to ten carry the densest new material and the first serious assessments, while motivation is at its lowest. A revision routine that only starts when exams are announced starts about five weeks late.
Withdrawal deadlines sit early. Most institutions set the last date to drop a course without penalty somewhere between weeks four and eight. If a course is going badly, the decision point arrives long before the failure does.
Credits, not months, drive graduation. Falling six credits behind in one semester does not cost you six credits — it can cost a year, because the course you missed is a prerequisite offered only in one semester. Check prerequisite chains before you drop anything.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks is a college semester?
Fifteen to sixteen weeks of teaching, plus roughly one week of final examinations. Counting orientation and reading days, about sixteen to eighteen weeks in total.
How many semesters are in a year in college?
Two — a first and a second semester. Optional summer sessions exist at many universities but are not part of the standard degree structure.
How many semesters is a four-year degree?
Eight semesters, at 15 credit hours each, giving the 120 semester credits an American bachelor’s degree requires. A Cameroonian Licence is six semesters and 180 LMD credits.
Is a semester the same as a term?
Not exactly. Every semester is a term, but not every term is a semester: quarters and British-style terms are also terms and are considerably shorter.
How long is a summer semester?
Usually six to twelve weeks, compressing a full course into half the time or less. The credit value is identical, so the weekly workload roughly doubles.
