ESSEC Douala is the gateway to a business and economics career at the top of Cameroon’s
private and public sector. The concours tests whether you can think quantitatively about economic
problems, produce accurate financial statements under time pressure, and write clearly in both
French and English. For a well-prepared candidate, ESSEC is one of the most achievable Grande
Ecole concours in Cameroon  provided you prepare the right things at the right depth. This
guide tells you exactly what those are.

What You Will Learn in This Guide

• What ESSEC is and what careers it leads to in banking, accounting, business, and
government.
• The structure of the six written papers and why Economics and Mathematics are
decisive.
• What ESSEC Economics, Accounting, and Mathematics papers actually test in detail.
• A practical preparation strategy for both Economics and science-background candidates
• The most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

What ESSEC Is and What It Leads To

The Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales de Douala, known as
ESSEC, is one of Cameroon’s leading business and economics schools. Attached to the
University of Douala, ESSEC trains economists, accountants, finance professionals, marketing
managers, and international business specialists who enter Cameroon’s banking sector, private
companies, government economic institutions, and international organisations.
The most visible career outcomes for ESSEC graduates include: banking and microfinance
(Afriland First Bank, SCB Cameroun, BICEC, UBA Cameroon, the BEAC), accounting and audit
(private practice and public audit institutions), government economic roles (Ministry of Finance,
Ministry of Economy, National Institute of Statistics), corporate management (sales, marketing,
supply chain, and general management at multinationals), and international business (trade,
AfCFTA implementation, and regional economic roles at CEMAC and ECCAS institutions).

The ESSEC Concours Structure

The ESSEC concours consists of six written papers. All papers are marked out of 20 with a
weighted average. Economics and Mathematics/Statistics carry the highest coefficients. All six
papers contribute to the result.
Economics (3 hours, highest weight). Microeconomics and macroeconomics both essay
based analysis and applied quantitative reasoning. A candidate who only prepares economics
qualitatively will consistently underperform.
Mathematics and Statistics (3 hours, high weight). Differential calculus applied to economic
functions, linear algebra for economic modelling, probability distributions, statistical inference, and
regression analysis. Higher than most candidates expect.
Accounting and Management (3 hours, high weight). Financial accounting using
SYSCOHADA, cost accounting, break-even analysis, and management principles.
French (2 hours, medium weight). Formal essay on a business, social, or economic topic, plus
summary of a provided text.
English (2 hours, medium weight). Formal essay, comprehension, and language exercises at
the same standard as the French paper.
General culture and business environment (2 hours, medium weight). Economic and
business developments in Cameroon, the CEMAC zone, and globally knowledge of BEAC,
OHADA, WTO, and recent Cameroonian government economic policy.

What the ESSEC Economics Paper Actually Tests

Microeconomics

Supply and demand (price determination, market equilibrium, effects of taxes and subsidies
graphically and quantitatively), elasticity (price, income, and cross-price elasticity  calculation
and interpretation), consumer theory (utility, indifference curves, budget constraint, consumer
equilibrium), producer theory (production functions, short-run and long-run costs, economies of
scale), market structures (perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly , Cournot model and game
theory basics, monopolistic competition), and market failures (externalities, public goods,
information asymmetries).

Macroeconomics

National income accounting (GDP expenditure, income, and output approaches; real vs
nominal; GNP vs GDP), the Keynesian model (the multiplier, IS curve derivation, fiscal policy
effects), the IS-LM model (money demand, money supply, LM curve, monetary policy), aggregate
supply and demand (AS-AD model  short-run and long-run effects of shocks), inflation and
unemployment (Phillips curve, stagflation, natural rate of unemployment), international economics
(exchange rates nominal and real, purchasing power parity, balance of payments, trade policy
tariffs, quotas, and their welfare effects), and development economics (structural
transformation, the role of the state with specific attention to Cameroon and the CEMAC zone).

How to Prepare the Accounting Paper

The ESSEC Accounting paper is one of the most predictable papers in the concours. The same
types of questions appear every year because financial accounting follows fixed rules. The
fundamental skill is producing a complete set of accounts from raw transaction data: journal
entries, ledger accounts, trial balance, income statement, and balance sheet. Practise this
complete sequence at least once per week.
The most commonly tested accounting adjustments are: depreciation (straight-line and reducing
balance), accruals and prepayments, bad debts and provisions for bad debts, and inventory
valuation (FIFO vs weighted average cost). Know the key financial ratios current ratio, gross
margin, return on equity, asset turnover, and gearing ratio  and be able to calculate, interpret,
and suggest what management action each implies.

The eStudyUniverse app’s Practice Center has ESSEC-specific Economics and Accounting
practice tests. Set a 20-question session on macroeconomic theory and the app tracks your topic
by topic performance  showing exactly where your analysis is breaking down.

Preparation Strategy and Common Mistakes

Preparation Timeline

Months 1-2: Build economics theory from first principles  microeconomics (markets, elasticity,
firm theory, market structures) and macroeconomics (national income, Keynesian model, IS-LM,
AS-AD). For each topic, practise both essay-type explanations and quantitative applications.
Months 3-4: Accounting from scratch or consolidation  build the complete double-entry
sequence until it is automatic and work through all adjustment types.

Month 5-6: Mathematics and Statistics calculus applied to economic functions, statistical methods, regression. Throughout: write one formal essay in French weekly and one in English, and read economic news daily.

Mistake 1: Qualitative-only economics preparation. Economics is half theory and half
quantitative reasoning. Candidates who only prepare the descriptive component consistently
underperform on the numerical, graphical, and analytical parts of the paper.
Mistake 2: Memorising accounting entries without understanding the double-entry
principle. If you understand that every transaction has a debit and a credit of equal value, you
can work out most journal entries from first principles. Candidates who memorise without
understanding fail on unfamiliar transaction types.
Mistake 3: Underestimating the Statistics component. Regression analysis, hypothesis
testing, and probability distributions are tested at a level above most economics A-Level courses.
If your statistics background is weak, dedicate 3-4 weeks specifically to this area.
Mistake 4: Ignoring the language and general culture papers. These four medium-weight
papers together account for a significant share of the total score. Candidates who focus
exclusively on economics and accounting lose marks they could have gained with modest
additional preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions About the ESSEC Concours

Can I pass ESSEC with a science A-Level background? Yes. If you have Mathematics at A
Level and are willing to prepare Economics and Accounting from scratch, your strong quantitative
skills will serve you well in the Mathematics/Statistics paper and the quantitative parts of
Economics.
Is ESSEC Douala the same as ESSEC Yaounde? No they are distinct institutions attached
to different universities. Their concours are separate. Make sure you are preparing for and
registering with the correct institution.
Can the eStudyUniverse app help with ESSEC preparation? Yes , Economics,
